Pieter Henket — Birds of Mexico City

A new Damiani volume from Dutch photographer Pieter Henket, working with Mexican stylist Chino Castilla over several years in Mexico City. The portraits focus on a generation of young Mexicans redefining gender, identity, tradition and spirituality on their own terms — dancers, mask-makers, designers and performers, photographed in a shared studio space the collaborators built for the project.

Henket's earlier work — the Lady Gaga Fame cover, the Congo Tales series, and shows at the Met and the Rijksmuseum — sets the technical register; the Mexico City work is where his interest in ritual and self-presentation meets a specific cultural moment.
